Social Ministry

The Social Ministry Committee, as per the bylaws of our constitution, “shall oversee the congregation’s ministry of service to all persons of all ages who are victims of illness, injustice, poverty, or any form of suffering in body, mind and/or spirit.”

On February 8, persons participated in an information session to learn about the many opportunities to serve within the congregation, community and world.  The evening’s presenters illuminated the need for the joy of serving.  The session will be presented again on a Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. in May.

Our ministries include:

  • The Food Pantry which provides household food for clients in our immediate neighborhood
  • York Conference of Lutherans Tutoring Program by helping recruit volunteers and providing snacks in conjunction with other churches in the York area
  • School backpacks for children of our Food Pantry clients (150+ backpacks in 2019)
  • Lutheran World Relief projects including SERRV sales and Sunday school children’s Barnyard project

Partnership with Jackson Elementary School to help students and parents with various needs including food, uniforms, hygiene kits, books, and coats.  Currently, we are taking donations to “Inspire creativity this summer”! Expand a child’s mind by supplying them with the tools they need to grow! Last year with your generous support, we provided over 300 new and gently used books to the children of Jackson Elementary School. This year, in addition to collecting books for grades PreK through 8th grade, we are collecting items for outdoor and educational activities such as bubbles, dry erase storybooks or boards, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, coloring books, colored pencils & crayons, flashcards, etc. Please place all donations in the two collection boxes in the Good Shepherd Room by May 15th. Thank you

Would you like to help?  The Committee meets every third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.  Members of the Committee are Pastor Stan Reep, Nancy Bennett, Jim Mummert, Janet Moore, and Larry Moore.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with lunch for the Kindergarten Class at Jackson.  The school needs volunteers who could give a half hour of their time to help during Kindergarten lunch from 11:50 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. to assist students through the food line, help students open milk, condiment packs, etc., monitor traffic in/out of the bathroom, and engage with students in conversation.  Please contact Nancy Bennett if you are interested in helping.  All volunteers will need to have clearances.

Thank you
